Princess aka Charli Rae once again finds herself and the Book Barn in the middle of a mystery in this fifth outing in the Book Barn mystery series. This time around, Charli has organized a book club. The book they're reading has disturbing similarities to people and places in the town of Hazel Rock, TX. But, the similarities don't end there, a murder occurs that could be right out of the book. And Charli Rae's good friend Sugar becomes the prime suspect when her nemesis is found dead.
There are sufficient subplots to fill out the story including some romance. The mayor's candidacy for political office becomes an important part of the story as well.
The characters are interesting and many are well developed especially, of course, Charli Rae and her friends and family. Life in smalltown Hazel Rock proves interesting because of the characters and their actions.
The book moves along at a good pace. Charli's meddling ways move it forward as she investigates to help clear her friend. As it nears the end, the pace picks up and ends on a high note.
I give this cozy 4 out of 5 stars. It's well written and interesting. The pace moves along at a good speed. And the mystery is resolved satisfactorily. I enjoyed the subplots as well. While this is the fifth book in the Book Barn series, enough background is given for you to enjoy it as a standalone. If you like a good smalltown cozy, then this book would be a good choice for you.

Sugar swallowed hard as if she could make Dean's grizzly secret disappear without anyone being the wiser. But secrets were never secrets in Hazel Rock, Texas, and I had no doubt Dean was going to learn that the hard way. (29% through on my Kindle)

Review: Lethal Literature by Kym Roberts
Charli and her Dad own and run the Book Barn, an independent bookstore. Charli gets the feeling that her father is hiding something from her. She's pretty sure it's something innocuous like that he has a crush on the county clerk who they are helping with a book drive for foster children. Then the clerk turns up dead and Charli sees her father at the scene of the crime. Her imagination and her need to protect her dad run into overdrive. Soon she finds herself hurrying to find the real killer and figure out just what her father is keeping secret.
Lethal Literature by Kym Roberts is the 4th installment in the Book Barn mysteries. I like that the characters still have surprises up their sleeves. The main characters are well-developed and continue to grow and change as we learn more about them. I particularly liked learning more about Isla, the judge's wife. I enjoyed the chemistry in the budding relationship between Charli and Mateo.
The setting for the series expands as well. It now includes another small neighboring town.
The mystery is well-written. The pacing is good for the most part. The end felt a little rushed to me, but it was still good and wrapped up loose ends. I was surprised as to who the killer was.
Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's well-written with interesting characters and a good plot and pacing. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy cozy mysteries. Charli and her friend Scarlet make a good pair of amateur sleuths. While you could read this as a standalone, the book does refer to events that take place in other installments in the series. It might just hook your interest to go back and read the others.

He smiled, that warm smile I'd always craved. His face lit and made me believe in tomorrow being brighter than today. Even on a good day. (23% through on my Kindle)
It's a cozy mystery, but romance plays a part in the subplot.

Review: Fatal Fiction by Kym Roberts
Charli Rae Warren is a kindergarten teacher in Colorado. She left Hazel Rock, Texas years ago as a teen. Now she has been called home to Texas to sign papers to sell The Book Barn which she is part owner in with her Daddy.
Charli hasn't been in town 5 minutes when she becomes a suspect in the murder of her realtor whose body she finds in the Book Barn. What was supposed to be a quick trip becomes extended fast. And Daddy is nowhere in sight. No one seems to know where he's gotten to or why.
With help from Scarlet who has transformed from ugly duckling to swan, her old beau from high school, and an armadillo, Charli tries to solve the mystery of whodunnit before she or her Daddy end up in jail.
This cozy mystery is a quick, fun read. It reminds me a little of a high school reunion since it refers back frequently to her time as a teen in the town. And at first, the town reacts to her as if she was that same teen. I won't say how things change for better or worse. Scarlet becomes her partner in crime so to speak as they seek the killer and try and improve the Book Barn so it will sell or turn a profit of some kind.
I enjoyed the characters of Charli and Scarlet in particular. The plot moves along well. The reader is provided with the same clues as Charli and Scarlet. There are enough twists in the plot that I didn't guess the killer ahead of time,
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Fatal Fiction is worth a read if you enjoy cozies with a taste of the small town South and a touch of humor. This is the first in a new series called Book Barn mysteries. It was published December 6, 2016 by Lyrical Underground.
