Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #328: A Wild Winter Swan by Gregory Maguire

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

From Goodreads:

Following her brother's death and her mother's emotional breakdown, Laura now lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, in a lonely townhouse she shares with her old-world, strict, often querulous grandparents. But the arrangement may be temporary. The quiet, awkward teenager has been getting into trouble at home and has been expelled from her high school for throwing a record album at a popular girl who bullied her. When Christmas is over and the new year begins, Laura may find herself at boarding school in Montreal.

Nearly unmoored from reality through her panic and submerged grief, Laura is startled when a handsome swan boy with only one wing lands on her roof. Hiding him from her ever-bickering grandparents, Laura tries to build the swan boy a wing so he can fly home. But the task is too difficult to accomplish herself. Little does Laura know that her struggle to find help for her new friend parallels that of her grandparents, who are desperate for a distant relative’s financial aid to save the family store.

As he explores themes of class, isolation, family, and the dangerous yearning to be saved by a power greater than ourselves, Gregory Maguire conjures a haunting, beautiful tale of magical realism that illuminates one young woman’s heartbreak and hope as she begins the inevitable journey to adulthood.

A Wild Winter Swan by Gregory Maguire is expected to be released October 6th, 2020 by William Morrow.

Why am I waiting on this book? I love retellings. This is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Wild Swans." I know there are other retellings of this tale out there, but this is the first one in novel-length I've seen in a while. And it will make a good fall read.

Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #327: The House on Widows Hill by Simon R. Green

Ishmael Jones investigates a haunted house . . . but is haunted by his own past in the latest of this quirky paranormal mystery series.

"That house is a bad place. Bad things happen there . . "

Set high on top of Widows Hill, Harrow House has remained empty for years. Now, on behalf of an anonymous prospective buyer, Ishmael and Penny are spending a night there in order to investigate the rumors of strange lights, mysterious voices, unexplained disappearances, and establish whether the house is really haunted.

What really happened at Harrow House all those years ago? Joined by a celebrity psychic, a professional ghost-hunter, a local historian, and a newspaper reporter, it becomes clear that each member of 'Team Ghost' has their own pet theory as to the cause of the alleged haunting. But when one of the group suddenly drops dead with no obvious cause, Ishmael realizes that if he can find out how and why the victim died, he will have the key to solving the mystery.

The House on Widows Hill by Simon R. Green is expected to be published July 2, 2020 by Severn House.
This is book #9 in the Ishmael Jones series.

Why am I waiting on this book? I have this series on my To Be Read list. As for this particular book, I enjoy a good haunted house story. This book looks like it will be a good and possibly quirky one.

I believe that a person can become possessed by someone else - at least in part. That one life can slip inside another, giving it shape. In this way, I could judge Sadie's reaction before it occurred, picture an expression in the second before she shared it. It was how I could anticipate what she would do before she did it, because I believed I understood how she thought, and the push and pull that would lead her to any given moment - except her final ones.

From burlesque dancing to Swedish massages, everyone has plenty of bucket-list activities to try, but it doesn't take long for Robyn to realize what – or who – her heart truly desires: Will.

Make that two problems: Ash is moving home... and he wants Robyn back.

The Never Have I Ever Club by Mary Jayne Baker is expected to be published June 18th, 2020 by Aria.

Why am I waiting on this book? I think it will make perfect summer reading. The plot sounds light and funny. The author won an RNA award for romantic comedy for another book. It just sounds like a fun read and distracting from everything going on in the world -  a great escape.

Now each evening I'd walk by on my way to the guest cottage and catch sight of something that made me look twice - a blur of movement. Thinking for an awful, beautiful moment: Sadie. But the only thing I ever saw in the darkened windows was my distorted reflection watching back. My own personal haunting. (p.18 on my Kindle)
