Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #358: All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter

Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

For fans of Naomi Novik and Katharine Arden, a dark gothic fairy tale from award-winning author Angela Slatter.

Long ago Miren O'Malley's family prospered due to a deal struck with the mer: safety for their ships in return for a child of each generation. But for many years the family have been unable to keep their side of the bargain and have fallen into decline. Miren's grandmother is determined to restore their glory, even at the price of Miren's freedom. A spellbinding tale of dark family secrets, magic and witches, and creatures of myth and the sea; of strong women and the men who seek to control them.

'A story as gorgeously gothic as its title. This is a novel of blood and bones, of salt and silver, of an absolutely haunting richness. I was compelled from the very beginning and held rapt to the end.’
Kat Howard, author of An Unkindness of Magicians

All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter is expected to be published March 9th, 2021 by Titan Books.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like fairy tales. I'm curious about this too because it's described as gothic. I want to know how far Miren's grandmother is willing to go. And I want to see what Miren will do.

She stepped aside as Nick Ransom and two uniformed officers entered the room. Ransom wore his badge on his belt, his gun under his arm, and his shirt clung to his chest for dear life. (14% through on my Kindle)

Review: A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

Sunshine Vicram is the newly appointed sheriff of Del Sol, New Mexico. It's her first day on the job and already things are really hopping. A woman crashes her car into the police station on her way to report her daughter missing. An escaped criminal is loose in the area. And a rooster named Puff Daddy has gone missing. Investigating will bring back memories of years past, both good and bad.

It's also her daughter Auri 's first day of school. Auri knows the missing girl and wants to help with the investigation.

Sunshine has a winning personality: friendly, efficient, and full of snark. She is very down to earth and relatable. Sunshine works with her best friend, Quincy. But she is drawn to other men like Levi Ravinder, a reformed bad boy.

Auri is smart, sweet, and shares her mother's gift for snark. She also shares her mother's investigative abilities. Part of the book is told from Sunshine's point of view and part from Auri's. It's interesting that Auri's point of view sounds very much like the adolescent she is.

I pretty much enjoyed the character interactions. The book was also well plotted. The story moves along at a good pace. Things are revealed as they come up. And even though the book covers a short period of time, the characters show some growth.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. There's a balance between the bad and the good. The humor is important to this. It's a good read. If you enjoyed the Charley Davidson books, you will enjoy this one even though there is only a touch of the paranormal. And if you enjoy a good mystery with humor, you will most likely enjoy this one too.

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones was published April 7th, 2020 by St. Martin's Press.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect the content of my review.

Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #357: No Gods, No Monsters by Cadwell Turnbull

Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

One October morning, Laina gets the news that her brother was shot and killed by Boston cops. But what looks like a case of police brutality soon reveals something much stranger. Monsters are real. And they want everyone to know it.

As creatures from myth and legend come out of the shadows, seeking safety through visibility, their emergence sets off a chain of seemingly unrelated events. Members of a local werewolf pack are threatened into silence. A professor follows a missing friend's trail of bread crumbs to a mysterious secret society. And a young boy with unique abilities seeks refuge in a pro-monster organization with secrets of its own. Meanwhile, more people start disappearing, suicides and hate crimes increase, and protests erupt globally, both for and against the monsters.

At the center is a mystery no one thinks to ask: Why now? What has frightened the monsters out of the dark?

The world will soon find out.

No Gods, No Monsters by Cadwell Turnbull is expected to be published September 7th, 2021 by Blackstone Publishing.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like the premise. What would happen if the monsters came out of the closet? And why would it be happening then? How would people react? What kind of consequences would follow this revelation?

Merope’s Best serves Merope’s worst coffee. I used the word coffee lightly because I’m not convinced that’s what the coffee shop sells. Mostly it peddles shock, horror, and public health scares—with hefty doses of caffeine added, concealing liquid atrocities behind the kind of names you find in any American coffee shop. (p. 19)

Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #356: Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent

Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

This high stakes, pacey reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood is perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber and Megan Spooner.

For as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember the village of Oakvale has been surrounding by the dark woods—a forest filled with terrible monsters that light cannot penetrate. Like every person who grows up in Oakvale she has been told to steer clear of the woods unless absolutely necessary.

But unlike her neighbors in Oakvale, Adele has a very good reason for going into the woods. Adele is one of a long line of guardians, women who are able to change into wolves and who are tasked with the job of protecting their village while never letting any of the villagers know of their existence.

But when following her calling means abandoning the person she loves, the future she imagined for herself, and her values she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe.

Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent is due out July 20th, 2021 from Harper Teen.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like reimaginings and retellings of fairy tales. This one sounds like it has an interesting approach with the women being shapeshifting guardians. I'm wondering why it is such a challenge to the main character and how she will resolve the problems.

You cannot adopt an angry young lady like a stray cat, a voice rather like his mother’s said in his head. Silver suspected it of being his conscience. He shoved it to one side.
