Book Review and Teaser: Killer Vibes by Jack Friday

From the publisher:

Meet Peter Key: self-proclaimed “laziest private investigator in Texas” (it’s harder than it looks), unapologetic bisexual, dedicated stoner, and the surprised recipient of a windfall inheritance from an uncle he barely knew. Peter’s life was a mess before, but now— as the owner of a dilapidated house in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Austin—he has a mountain of debt to deal with and pressure to sell from every side.

But Peter doesn’t like to be pushed around. And when he discovers a bag full of cash, he starts to suspect his uncle’s death wasn’t an accident. He soon finds himself pulled into a lethal game where not everybody plays by the rules.

Fortunately, Peter’s never been good at following rules.

Sexy, suspenseful, and packed with Austin’s quirks, Killer Vibes is a wild and wickedly funny romp that introduces us to the irresistible and irrepressible PI, Peter Key.

Killer Vibes by Jack Friday was released July 14, 2026 by Minotaur Books. It's the first book in a new series. Praise for the novel included a blurb by Elle Cosimano: "Peter Key is my new favorite amateur sleuth."

The teaser: (Peter is talking about pictures he is packing.)

"Here was my sister Jenn getting her bachelor's. Here was Aunt Sylvie at my birthday a few years back, both of us burdened by party hats and looking as thrilled as a dog in a cone."

My thoughts: It's a good book. It was not quite as funny as I expected, but still a good book. I had not read a mystery with a character quite like Peter before. He definitely doesn't play by other people's rules. His independent streak sometimes gets him into trouble, other times out of it. He is a sympathetic character. I wanted to see him succeed and not get hurt. He was kind and smart. Some of the other characters were notable as well. I really liked his boss, Grady. And I liked his boyfriend Carlos and dog Brutus.

As in all good mysteries, things aren't always what they seem to be. There were plausible red herrings and twists. And of course some of the biggest twists came near the end.

Generally speaking, the pace of the book was well done. There were some lulls, but only to deliver more information.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's well-written with interesting characters. I'd recommend this book to fans of mysteries with a private investigator lead. Also the reader should know that Peter Key, the main character is bisexual. If that bothers a reader, then they should skip the book rather than complain about it later.

I received my copy of the book from the publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect my opinions in any way.

“Nikki?”
“Yes?”
 “You’re your mother.”
She sighed melodramatically. “I know. I swore I would be myself, but every time I open my mouth she comes out.”

Even at forty-four, in benevolent lighting, people say I look like a college kid. Blame the olive skin, inherited from my Greek-American parents, coupled with girlish features. The two work almost as well as a portrait in an attic. My back knew the truth, though. The muscles regularly reminded me that the two hundred thousand miles cutoff was fast approaching under the hood, no matter the shape of the bodywork. (location 113 on my Kindle)

Merry Mansfield told Yancy a version of her life so far-fetched that he bit his lower lip, trying not to laugh. “That’s so rude,” she said.
“You’ve got a charming imagination. I could listen to you go on all day.”
"What did I say that you don’t believe?”
“Basically every word.”
“See, I’m just testing you. So far, so good.”

Garrett's ire skyrocketed so fast he saw stars. Just like she knew it would. The scene was played to orchestral perfection. Each line delivered with just the right pause. Just the right inflection. The man's expression full of menace. Hers full of fear, yet her chin lifted in defiance.

Garrett had been played like a heated game of Monopoly. (p.22)

The people she passed on her way to SSS seemed locked in a dream, soft-eyed, faces turned to one another, steam rising off the cups of coffee in their gloved hands. She had the eerie sense that they were dreaming her, a girl in a dark coat who would disappear when they woke. (p. 8)

I believe that a person can become possessed by someone else - at least in part. That one life can slip inside another, giving it shape. In this way, I could judge Sadie's reaction before it occurred, picture an expression in the second before she shared it. It was how I could anticipate what she would do before she did it, because I believed I understood how she thought, and the push and pull that would lead her to any given moment - except her final ones.

Now each evening I'd walk by on my way to the guest cottage and catch sight of something that made me look twice - a blur of movement. Thinking for an awful, beautiful moment: Sadie. But the only thing I ever saw in the darkened windows was my distorted reflection watching back. My own personal haunting. (p.18 on my Kindle)

Thick clouds soaked up the vibrant colors of daybreak and splashed them across the heavens like a manic artist who'd just scored a new bottle of Adderall. Orange Crush and cotton candy collided and dovetailed, making the sky look like a watercolor that had been left out in the rain.

I hadn't mentioned Becky's name to Cooper, though he'd pressed once more before leaving. I had one more round of investigating to do myself before I dragged her name through the mud. At the moment, I didn't have a strong case against her -- a few weird looks and a potential tripping did not a murderer make.

Secrets and Stilettos by Gina LaManna was published on January 10th, 2020 by LaManna Books. It's book one in the Murder in Style series. I finished reading it this week. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. "I tried to warn you," Cooper said, climbing down and helping me to my feet. "Can I get you a sweatshirt? Hot chocolate?"
