The fifty-something principal, who was never an educator herself, has the complexion of an old leather canteen and the personality of razor wire. She's a person accustomed to finding fault in everything, including puppies and cake. As for children, mention kids and watch her inner Roald Dahl villain emerge. Any moment now Andreas expects her to present him with a massive chocolate cake and scream at him to eat until the plate is licked clean.(pp. 16-17)

Pants on Fire by Alex A. King was published May 9, 2025. It's part of the Women of Greece series. Each book can be read as a standalone. The series is a lot of fun and makes for great beach reading.

It's best not to be specific with wishes. Otherwise, you end up getting what you think you want instead of what you really need. How dangerous.

Nat is a Chihuahua, though. She'll never let this go. She's Katie's ride-or-die, and right now she's in her Die! Die! Die! mode. At this rate, Tyler won't be there for his child's birth. Not if she doesn't keep Nat away from sharp things. And poisons.

"Steam exited Frances's ears, swirling around her perfectly coiffed head until it formed demon horns.

There was something so comforting about a pancake--perfectly round and tan as a buckskin pony. Wanting kids as an adult was a lot like wanting a pony as a child--you couldn't know how much work they'd be until you got them home.

Finally, because I had come to see the little old lady, and I was nothing if not a purposeful little girl, I cleared my throat and demanded to know where she was. The dragon looked at me, startled. It said nothing. It winked one eye. It held one finger to lipless jaws as though to say "Shh."

On the whole, when it comes to murder, the stats very much favor the men. The odd woman is thrown into the mix every now and again, but she is inevitably perimenopausal (and having been through the change myself, I certainly understand why). But an elderly woman or a little girl committing murder? It's one in a million.

“What’s going on?” The voice carried more authority than the president and the pope combined.

Frances Walford, Ellison’s mother, stood a few feet away on the drive. She wore a linen pantsuit with sensible heels and pearls the size of marbles. She looked down her nose at the officer with the disdain she usually reserved for people who ate their dinner roll off the wrong butter plate.

Happy Book Birthday and a Teaser from Dollface by Lindy Ryan

From the publisher:

Barbie meets Scream with a 90s nostalgia twist in this horror romp from Bless Your Heart author Lindy Ryan.

Horror author Jill has just moved to suburban New Jersey, hoping to fit in with the new PTA moms and maybe not weird everyone out with her Final Girl coffee mug. You know. Make some real friends.

But then a plastic face-masked serial killer begins slashing their way through town, one overly made-up mom at a time. The police are incredulous. The moms are indignant. And Jill is slowly wrapped into a killer’s murderous spree, until she might just be the last woman standing.

A delightfully murderous novel that is equal parts scathing and salacious, Dollface will win you over with its gossip and gore, one body at a time.

"A juicy, irreverent and bloody twist on the genre." - Variety

Dollface by Lindy Ryan is available today from Minotaur Books.

A Teaser for you:

This is a lie. I will not be going anywhere near the furnace. Horror author or not, I don't do basements-- or dusty attics, or backyard pools. (location 177 on my Kindle)

What are you reading? Is there a book out today that you've been waiting for?

Teaser Tuesday and Happy Book Birthday to Strange Animals by Jarod K. Anderson

Today is the release day for Strange Animals by Jarod K. Anderson from Ballantine Books.

From the publisher:

An ordinary man discovers a hidden world of supernatural creatures—and an unexpected home—in this enchanting contemporary fantasy debut.

Green trips on the curb, falls flat into the street, and sees the city bus speeding toward him. And then . . . blink. He’s back on the curb, miraculously still alive. A five-foot-tall crow watches him from atop a nearby sign, somehow unseen by the rushing crowd of morning commuters.

Desperate for answers and beset by more visions of impossible creatures, Green finds his way to a remote campsite in the Appalachian Mountains, where he meets a centuries-old teacher and begins an apprenticeship unlike anything he could imagine.

Under his new mentor’s grouchy tutelage, Green studies the time-bending rag moth, the glass fawn, and the menacing horned wolf. He begins to see past hidden nature’s terrors and glimpse its beauty, all while befriending fellow misfits—and finding connection and community.

Along the way come clues about the forces that set him on this path—and, most incredibly, a sense of purpose and fulfillment like nothing he’s felt before.

But Green’s new happiness promises to be short-lived, because alongside these marvels lurks a deadly threat to this place he’s already come to love.

Creepy, cozy, and beautiful, Strange Animals is a fantasy about home, belonging, and the fearfully wondrous nature all around us.

“Anderson has conceived of such a rich world, and such a textured mythology. I can’t remember a time when cryptids felt more . . . real.”—Justin McElroy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Adventure Zone series.

And a teaser for you:

Green dressed and Valentina led him to the makeshift structure she called “the laboratory.” Its walls were part corrugated metal, part wooden siding, part roofing shingles. It fit in with the rest of the camp insomuch as it didn’t break the pattern of vastly diverse, mismatched structures laid out like spilled Lego bricks in front of the library tree.

From Jarod K. Anderson's Strange Animals Kindle Edition about 52% into the story. Honestly, I have to say I'm really enjoying it. Check it out if you enjoy fantasies with cryptids.

The dragon had been hunting people off Colin's Enemies List since 1990, five years now, and all of them had prayed for intercession, had suffered, bled, feared, and bargained with Jesus, Allah, and the stars. It always ended in fire. Allie didn't know how hard it would be to penetrate the scales slabbing King Sorrow's body, but she was quite certain that devout prayer bounced right off them. (page 326)

No one else is in the room, so she allows herself the pleasure of running her hands across the spines, listening to the little voice in her head that chatters their contents to her. She's always been good at this language -- it's why Chiron had been so eager to put her to work so young. As a thief, it's been indispensable. (pp 66-67)
