Friday Favorites: Autobuy/Autoread Authors: Alex A. King

 

A question I've seen a lot asked of book readers and. book bloggers is, "Who do you autobuy?" I can understand that because it indicates which authors are deemed precious enough to part with money to be able to read them at your leisure. But some of us can't afford it as much as we'd like to.

I'd like to know, who do you autoread? Which authors' new books do you reserve from the library, or buy - first or second hand? Everyone has a few authors that they look forward to reading no matter what they are writing. And who it is, doesn't always remain the same, Sometimes it changes according to mood or life circumstances.

For me currently, one of my autoreads and autobuys is Alex A. King. She has written at least 5 different series. The first one I ran across was the Kat Makris series. Book one is titled Disorganized Crime. Kat grew up hearing tales from her father about Greece's boogeyman. Come to find out there is some truth to his tales and Kat must confront the somewhat familiar monster. Family Ghouls is the first book in the Greek Ghouls series. It's another fun series. The main character can see ghosts and has been tasked by her friend and neighbor to find out who killed her. Kick the Bucket is the first in the Revenge Services series. Each book focuses on a different character that works for the service. I thought the concept of an agency that helps people get revenge on others was interesting and a fun thing to read about. I also have enjoyed the Women of Greece series. Pants on Fire is the latest one. They are fun to read too. More romance, which I seldom read, than anything else. Each book focuses on a different woman and man. It came out last May and focuses on a woman who inherits half a house from her grandmother. The Penny Post Myth Agent series is still funny, but for some reason I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the other series. When I find out that she has something new coming out, I either read it on Kindle Unlimited or purchase the Kindle version.

What draws me to her writing is the humor and descriptions.

Why am I waiting on this book? I want to see what happens with Sable. Does she know all along that these "clients" are using the plots she provides for nefarious reasons or is it a surprise to her when someone does? One reviewer said, "Sharp, cynical, and very funny, Tyler's The Murder Planner is a dark comedy about the thin red line between plotting a murder and committing one," G.M. Malliet. I'm curious as to how funny it is. I like some humor to the books I read when I can get it. And I wonder if she will get away with murder...

Book Review: Everyone in This Bank Is a Thief by Benjamin Stevenson

Everyone in This Bank Is a Thief  by Benjamin Stevenson was released March 17, 2026 by Mariner Books. This is the fourth book in the Ernest Cunningham series.

My Thoughts: Overall, I thought this was a good book. I have a tendency to go along for the ride rather than figure out all of Ern's clues. Definitely that was the case with this book. Ten heists, ten thieves was a little much to wrap my mind around consistently. Yet, it all makes sense in the end no matter how many twists there are. The thief who only wants one dollar from the vault leaves us wondering what is it he really wants. And there is an addition of a highly unlikely form of death which somehow still occurs in spite of that.

Ernest is still Ernest sometimes even frustratingly so. I did cringe a little at some of the things he did in the name of investigation. And the book did get slow for a little while, but in the end, it's a good book with interesting premises and characters and a really big twist or two.

If you have read the other books in the series, you will most likely enjoy this one as well. If you enjoy locked room mysteries, you will also enjoy this one as the whole bank becomes a locked room since they are being held hostage. This book is worth a read.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like the title. It piques my interest. I suspect that by the time this one comes out, I will be ready for a lighter read. This is a romantasy and a mystery.  And it definitely strikes me as a light read. Probably has some humor to it as well.

Why am I waiting on this book? I've read the first two books in the trilogy. I'd like to find out what happens to these college kids. I would love to see them come out of it relatively unscathed. But, being Dark Academia, Urban Fantasy, and Contemporary Dark Fantasy, it's hard to predict just what will happen.

Audiobook Review: Finlay Donovan Crosses the Line by Elle Cosimano

My Thoughts: 

Elle Cosimano brings us to a point to find out what happened to Vero that she got arrested and shipped to Maryland from Virginia. If you've been reading the series, then you know why already. But, it is brought up early in the book, so that part of the plot is easy enough to follow.

As usual, Vero and Finlay get up to shenanigans trying to solve the mystery and keep Vero out of jail. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Nick is babysitting the kids. No doubt this will lead to shenanigans as well. Taking care of young kids pretty much guarantees that.

I was listening to the 12 chapter sampler. It's well done. The narrator is clear and enjoyable to listen to. Now, I am going to get a copy of the book ASAP to find out what happens next.

I gave this book 5/5 stars. You really should read the books in order to see the relationships and attitudes toward each other develop. Vero has helped Finlay out many times. This time, it's Finlay to the rescue. If you enjoy your mysteries with a helping of humor, then you will enjoy this series.

Book Review: I'm Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home by Fergus Craig

I'm Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home by Fergus Craig was released February 17, 2026 from Berkley.

My Thoughts: I thought the whole premise was interesting from a retirement home filled with law enforcement and government officials to a main character who was formerly a serial killer.

Carol, the retired serial killer, has to prove her innocence if she has any hope of staying out of jail and staying in her nice new digs. She uses her history and personal experience as a killer to suss out who it might be. Her new friends help her reluctantly. Simply put, they are wary of her, but want to solve the mystery. With their backgrounds as a cop, forensic pathologist, and barrister/government official, the group is well equipped with Carol to solve the mysteries surrounding the death she witnesses from her balcony. I especially like that while the characters are older, none of them fit the doddering old pensioner stereotype, but are instead forces to be reckoned with.

The plot moved along at a good pace and maintained my interest. My only complaint was that there was evidence the reader is not privy to as they try and solve along with the group. There were many suspects, but in the end it was down to one. 

I enjoyed the mystery and the characters and gave it 4 out of 5 stars. If you have enjoyed mysteries like The Thursday Murder Club mysteries and Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, then you will most likely enjoy this one as well.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like the way it sounds. I enjoy southern gothic literature. I am wondering about the first murder as well as the second one. What caused them to get rid of the first man? And just how good are they at it? Milly has a talent for tea leaves. Does Francis have a talent as well that will affect the plot?

Why am I waiting on this book? I want to see what Fergus Craig does with the idea of a retired serial killer. Why did she retire? Was it solely to stay out of jail? Or was it that it was getting to be too much trouble at her age? What happens when she realizes there are multiple retired law enforcement officers in her home? And how does she ferret out another killer to prove her innocence? Needless to say, I have questions and I'm looking forward to seeing what the answers are.

Book Review: Wreck Your Heart by Lori Rader-Day

My Thoughts: The characters were interesting, some more than others. Dahlia was probably the most interesting character in the book which is apt since it's a book about her. When the book starts, we see her at close to her lowest moment. She has been evicted because her boyfriend Joey disappeared with the rent money. She's carrying her belongings in a trash bag going back to Alex McPhee's Tavern. Her life after this point has its ups and downs. More downs than ups. Honestly I felt for her much of the time, but there were occasions where she came across to me as difficult and a little bratty. As the book progresses, the reader can see her changing. She grows emotionally.

Second most interesting character would be Alex McPhee. He is the neurodivergent owner and bartender of McPhee's Tavern. I thought that the author did a pretty good job of portraying him without hitting the audience over the head with his differences.

Plot wise, it's slow at first. When it picked up though, it kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. The closer to the end, the faster the plot runs. I was rooting for Dahlia and her friends and family to come out alive at the end. The mysteries that drive the plot are varied. There's something for everyone.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. Overall it is well-written. The characters are interesting. The plot moves once it gets going. I would recommend this mystery for people who like found family stories, a variety of mysteries, and diversity in the characters.
