Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #338: Southern Bred and Dead by Angie Fox

Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

A haunted church. A ghastly death. Can Verity clear up the case before she’s buried way over her head?

Verity Long would really like a day off. Between uncovering the culprit who capped her gangster ghost housemate and dodging the bomb her boyfriend just dropped on their relationship, her spiritual calling has gotten complicated. But when she steps out for a little fun at a church fundraiser, she has another mystery on her hands when a family friend plunges from the bell tower.

With her pet skunk and a spectral mobster buddy in tow, Verity charges back into the world of furious phantoms. But as she follows a shocking trail of clues through a dangerous speakeasy, a possessed movie theatre, and a spooky mob safehouse, she could end up sleeping with the ghostly fishes.

Can Verity lay everything to rest before a mysterious murderer reads her last rites?

There's not a long wait for this one. It's expected to be published August 28th, 2020 from Moose Island Books.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like  this series. It's fun and light reading. I like the way Verity and Frankie, her ghost associate, interact. There's a good sense of humor to this series and just a touch of romance. If you enjoy paranormal cozies, it's worth a read.

There's a really cute cover but I can't find a source to share it from. Do check it out on Amazon or Goodreads.

My teaser:

"Night tossed a blanket over the farm. I wandered around the house like a tragic figure, waiting for my long-lost love to return from sea. Too bad I didn’t have one of those sweeping dresses with hoops or a bustle. I felt like I could be more of a tragic figure in an old-timey dress." 28% on my Kindle

Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #337: The Secret of Rosalita Flats by Tim W. Jackson

Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event that had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlighted upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

from the publisher:

Cal’s a hapless watchmaker. Marina’s a beautiful scuba instructor. They were friends as kids. Now, not so much. Together they’ll solve the secret of Rosalita Flats. If the sharks don’t get them first.

The Secret of Rosalita Flats is about a man trying to unload the football-shaped house he inherited, while dodging the backwater Blacktip Island’s quirky collection of con artists, smugglers and other ne’er-do-wells: an ornery housekeeper who refuses to be fired, a rum-soaked attorney with his own agenda, a chair-wielding resort manager who thinks he’s an avenging angel, and a self-styled psychic who may be able to see the future.

There’s also a mysterious someone—or something—trying to scare Cal off the island. Cal has to figure out what his old man was mixed up in, fast, if he’s to sell the house and get off the crazy little rock alive.

The Secret of Rosalita Flats by Tim W. Jackson is expected to be published September 18th, 2020.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like that one of the reviews I read said it was similar to Carl Hiaasen's writing. It sounds like it will be a slightly weird and funny book. The cast of characters sounds eccentric.

Can't Wait Wednesday/Waiting on Wednesday #336: This Will Be Funny Someday by Katie Henry

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel comes to high school in acclaimed author Katie Henry’s coming-of-age YA contemporary about a girl who accidentally falls into the world of stand-up comedy. Perfect for fans of John Green and Becky Albertalli!

Sixteen-year-old Izzy is used to keeping her thoughts to herself—in school, where her boyfriend does the talking for her, and at home, where it’s impossible to compete with her older siblings and high-powered parents.

When she mistakenly walks into a stand-up comedy club and performs, the experience is surprisingly cathartic. After the show, she meets Mo, an aspiring comic who’s everything Izzy’s not: bold, confident, comfortable in her skin. Mo invites Izzy to join her group of friends and introduces her to the Chicago open mic scene.

The only problem? Her new friends are college students—and Izzy tells them she’s one, too. Now Izzy, the dutiful daughter and model student, is sneaking out to perform stand-up with her comedy friends. Her controlling boyfriend is getting suspicious, and her former best friend knows there’s something going on.

But Izzy loves comedy and this newfound freedom. As her two parallel lives collide—in the most hilarious of ways—Izzy must choose to either hide what she really wants and who she really is, or finally, truly stand up for herself.

This Will Be Funny Someday by Katie Henry is expected to be published January 19th, 2021 by HarperCollins.

Why am I waiting on this book? I like the plot idea. I like the comparison to Mrs. Maisel. The only thing I'm not terribly keen on is what the author said is an abusive relationship between the protagonist and her boyfriend. On Goodreads the author mentions it in her review as a trigger warning. Still I think the book has a lot of potential.

From the publisher: In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times bestselling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab is expected to be published October 6th, 2020 by Tor Books.

“Do you know, did the Puck seduce my Hippolyta?” “I think not, Your Grace. The puppet was merely making a jest at your expense.” It was not a lie, really. I did not know for a fact that Puck had been bonking the warrior queen. Speaking truth to power is a noble endeavor but of limited utility if one’s head is in a basket. (27% on my Kindle)
