Friday Favorites: Urban Fantasy

 

Urban Fantasy is a genre that became more popular starting in the 1980s. In Urban Fantasy, the magical shares our world, but is often hidden in some way. It differs from Magical Realism in that in Magical Realism, the magic is accepted as a normal part of the world. Not everyone has magic, but those that do or those around them more or less accept it as part of the status quo. When you think of Urban Fantasy, think about perhaps some of the magical people/creatures living underground in old subway tunnels. Or perhaps inhabiting an arts studio where their eccentricities might be discounted rather than really noticed.

My introduction to Urban Fantasy came with the book Dreams Underfoot by Charles de Lint. It is a collection of short stories that take place in the fictional city of Newford. Since the birth of Newford, the author has gone on to write many more stories that take place there as well as in other locations. Newford is a favorite of fans as are some of the characters that inhabit there such as Jilly Coppercorn and The Crow Girls.

Terri Windling is also of note as she has been editor, writer, artist and more in the genre and beyond starting when it became more popular.

If you enjoy contemporary fantasy, you will most likely enjoy urban fantasy. I remember being surprised at how many people chose to use a blend of Celtic and Native American beings. For example, in book one of the Walker Papers, Urban Shaman, Joanne Walker discovers that she is a shaman and must save people from the Wild Hunt. Some other authors design a magic system virtually from scratch - the Elemental Assassin series for example.

Question: Is it possible to have urban fantasy in a historical city setting such as Boston? An example here would possibly be The Whimbrel House series by Charlie N. Holmberg.

Why am I waiting on this book? This book is the 6th book in the Soulwood series featuring Nell and her coworkers. It takes place in the same world as the Jane Yellowrock books with some crossovers possible. I have enjoyed watching Nell grow in confidence and abilities as the series has progressed. She works well with the rest of the Psy-LED team she is a part of. I'm wondering just what they will be up against this time and how Nell's abilities will play into it. If you like urban fantasy, this is a good series.

Book Review: Final Heir by Faith Hunter

My thoughts: This is definitely not the book to start reading the series with. It is, however, a good one for wrapping up the series. Loose ends are tied up. Character growth is evident for several characters through their thoughts and actions. And several characters get a version of their HEA.

I had two very minor problems with the book. One was that there were a few instances of Angie being like a deus ex machina. She provided vital information just when they needed it. I know this helped move the plot along, but sometimes it was too convenient. The other was the amount of detail given to the types of weapons used. This is easily scanned over though, and does not hold up the action.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. It's well written. It does a good job resolving loose ends. The problems I did have with it were minor. And it's left open enough for the possibility of future short stories or novellas set in the same world.

If you've been reading this series, this book is a must read. If you haven't started it yet, but enjoy urban fantasy, start at the beginning. It's a good series.

Final Heir by Faith Hunter was published September 6th, 2022 by Ace Books.

Book Review: Of Claws and Fangs by Faith Hunter

My thoughts:

The stories may have been previously published, but not all of them are readily available elsewhere. Faith Hunter puts a note at the beginning of the collection about this as well as brief notes before each story explaining its origin and where it might fall in the timeline of things. 

I thought all of the stories were excellent which is often unusual in a collection or anthology. While I enjoyed them all, the story "Bound into Darkness" stood out to me. It's a little longer than the rest, but it held me rapt. It's got Liz Everhart and Eli Younger as the main characters. It's told in alternating points of view between the two. There's plenty of action and magic. And there's loads of suspense.

Overall, I give this collection 5 out of 5 stars. I agree with the publisher that this is a must read for anyone who enjoys Faith Hunter's books. Other fans of urban fantasy might enjoy the book as well. It could serve as an introduction to Jane Yellowrock, Nell Ingram, and other characters and elements of their world.

Why am I waiting on this book? I want to know what happens next in the series, especially to the Yellowrock Clan. I don't know if it can be read as a standalone, but even if it can, the experience will be richer if you've read some of the other books in the series. It's a wonderful urban fantasy series full of shapechangers, vampires, witches and more.

Why am I waiting on this one? I enjoy reading this series and seeing how Nell grows and changes and how the team grows closer through their experiences. And I look forward to the cover being revealed.

Review: Shattered Bonds by Faith Hunter

Jane Yellowrock, a shape-shifter, has retreated to the Appalachian Mountains not far from Asheville, NC. She’s sick and in serious pain from a magical cancer, but she can’t outrun danger. The younger Son of Darkness is after Jane because he wants some of the magical things she owns and a little revenge against the Queen of Darkness. He’s not above attacking and manipulating friends and acquaintances of Jane to get what he wants. Jane must find a suitable shape strong enough for her to fight him and his minions – one that has less of the magical cancer hopefully than her human form.

Shattered Bonds by Faith Hunter is the 13th book in the Jane Yellowrock series. It was published October 29th, 2019 by Ace.

Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It’s an action-packed adventure for Jane and company. Circumstances in the story test Jane’s limits. The Son of Darkness is a particularly nasty vampire. It gets kind of intense in parts. I found occasionally I had to put it down for a few minutes before I could return to the story. On the other hand, I stayed up most of the night to finish reading the book.

It still has the same snark and interactions between characters that we’ve grown to love. A good portion of the action is Jane-centered. And it mentions events that take place in the Soulwood series also by Faith Hunter. Some of the characters overlap between the two series.

I would recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy. It’s a must-read if you’ve been following Jane Yellowrock. I would not read this as a stand-alone. The events were set in motion in previous books. The series is definitely worth a read though.

Why am I waiting on this one? There were some dramatic changes to the world Jane Yellowrock lives in in the last book, Dark Queen. I want to see what's happening with Jane now, post-battle. I want to see her hopefully survive the disease that her magic has brought on. And to see her triumph, hopefully, against the vampires that are after her. I've really enjoyed the Jane Yellowrock series so far and want to see where this book takes Jane.

Review: Circle of the Moon by Faith Hunter

Nell bears little resemblance to the "widder woman" she once was. She is now a full-fledged probie with PsyLED. One night Rick, her boss, changes unexpectedly into his cat form. He wakes up near a witch circle where there is a dead black cat and contacts PsyLED. Nell and Occam are dispatched to check things out and help Rick.

More circles appear with more sacrifices. And it seems someone is trying to force Rick to change into his cat. Nell reads the earth and can tell that somehow vampires are involved, but not how they are involved.

Meanwhile, Nell is trying to prepare her house for her sister Mud to move in permanently. And a man from the compound where the rest of her family lives wants to court Mud. This is not a good thing.

This book takes place after the events of Dark Queen by Faith Hunter - a Jane Yellowrock book which takes place in the same world as the Soulwood series featuring Nell and PsyLED. In Circle of the Moon, Nell tries to reach out to Jane and has difficulty making contact with her. If you read Dark Queen, you'll understand why this is so.

Also in Circle of the Moon, some of Rick's background is explained which I think made him a little more of a sympathetic character. We finally find out more about what his tattoos mean and how he got them. His life has not been without trauma.

There is a subplot involving the relationship between Nell and Occam. And another subplot involving Nell preparing to be guardian to Mindy, aka Mud. These both make excellent subplots and help to further characterize Nell, Occam, and Mindy.

Nell's abilities to read the land and use the magic of Soulwood in various situations continues to grow and change. This makes Nell a very interesting protagonist.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. The writing and plotting are well done. I had an issue with how the book ends, but it was minor. To say what my issue was would risk spoilers so I will leave it at that. This is not a good standalone novel. It would be best if you start the Soulwood series at the beginning. And if you read some of the Jane Yellowrock series as well, you will get added depth. The series overall is worth reading and Circle of the Moon is no exception.

Why am I waiting on this one? I've enjoyed watching Nell grow and change from the more timid "widder woman" she was to the professional agent she is blossoming into being in the other books in this urban fantasy series. She is tied to Rick from the other books, not in a romantic sense, but in a magical sense. So this looks to be an interesting novel. I want to see what happens to Rick and how Nell deals with it or helps him. I want to see how the team copes as well.

Review: Dark Queen by Faith Hunter

Dark Queen by Faith Hunter is the 12th book in the Jane Yellowrock series. This is not a standalone type novel. It's definitely a part of a series and is a culmination of some plot points. It would seem this was originally to be the last book in the series, but part way through they decided to add two more books to it. It is still a very good book.

Leo, the master of the city of New Orleans, has been challenged to a blood challenge called the Sangre Duello by the leader of the European vampires. This is serious. If Leo and his people lose, then New Orleans will come under the European vamps control and people will suffer - humans, witches, vampires, everyone.

Jane, as Leo's enforcer, is very much involved in the preparations for the challenge. She is having to learn to accept that she can't control everything and must delegate.

The action is virtually nonstop. It starts early on with Jane answering the door and being shot at. It doesn't seem to let up much until after the challenge has been met. It's a fast-paced read.

I liked it all. Jane's flippancy infects Leo's handling of things but in a calculated way.  I also liked the conversations she has with Beast who is "good ambush hunter" among other things. The touch of romance is nice and gives a brief respite from the action. There is also a subplot involving a possible blood relation of Jane's.

Is the ending a cliffhanger? In many ways, yes. It's still very readable as it is. I do look forward to the next book to see how the issues are resolved.

Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's a class act, well-written with good characterization. It kept my attention and piqued my interest as to where the series will go from here. Do not read this as your first Jane Yellowrock book ever.
