This week I'm waiting on Dead Beat by Leigh Bardugo. It's the third book in the Alex Stern/Ninth House trilogy.

Why am I waiting on this book? I've read the first two books in the trilogy. I'd like to find out what happens to these college kids. I would love to see them come out of it relatively unscathed. But, being Dark Academia, Urban Fantasy, and Contemporary Dark Fantasy, it's hard to predict just what will happen.

Why am I waiting on this book? It sounds interesting to me that initially she wants to flip the house she inherits, but things get more complicated. The complications are really what sells it. I expect to want her to succeed. I look forward to seeing how she reacts to what Salem throws her way.

Why am I waiting on this book? It appeals to me because it's billed as a paranormal comedy. It's nice to see a book that may be about the apocalypse that's not all doom and gloom.

Book Review: Betwixt by Darynda Jones

 

Defiance Dayne has pretty much lost everything except her car in a nasty divorce. Much to her surprise she learns she has inherited a house in Salem, Massachusetts from a stranger named Ruthie Goode. She gets in her vintage mint green Volkswagen Beetle and heads east. 

Defiance meets the lawyer at the house where the lawyer practically throws the keys at her in her hurry to get away from the house named Percival. Not long after that, she meets the delicious looking handyman, Roane. Soon her BFF Annette joins her at the house. People start showing up at the door asking her to help find things. They seem to think she is a witch. After some weird events, Defiance begins to think they may be right.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were for the most part likable except for her ex and his mother. We meet her family and the chief of police among others.

The style of the writing is similar to the Charley Davidson series. I had no issue with this. I enjoy that style. I had a very minor issue with the way that Defiance comes across as much younger than her 40 something years.

Plot moves along at a fast enough rate. I just wanted her to open the first file on the computer faster. I enjoyed the twists. The end was a little bit of a cliffhanger. I'm glad I'm reading it now when the second book is already available.

I gave this book 5 stars. Overall it's worth a read. There is mystery, paranormal,and a touch of romance. If you've read other things by Darynda Jones and liked them, you will enjoy this book. It's full of snark, action, and twists. 

Betwixt is the first book in the Betwixt and Between series. Bewitched is book two and is available now. Beguiled, book three, will be available February 15th, 2021 from Feather & Leaf, LLC.

In a word, he was stunning. Because nothing short of stunning would give me pause in this particular situation. I had never, in all of my forty-plus years, thought a possible intruder handsome. The mind didn’t work that way. If it did, survival of the fittest would be a moot point. All of Darwin’s work for naught.

Then again, it could have been the kilt. (p.15)

Review: The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs by Katherine Howe

Connie Goodwin is an on tenure track professor working on writing a book on the history of witchcraft, and in particular, the women who were called witches. She hs a vested interest in this because she comes from a long line of witches seemingly starting with Livvy Hasseltine and her mother.

The book alternates between snippets of her ancestors' lives and workings and the year 2000. Connie is desperately seeking a way to combat a curse on the women of her family that her mother makes her aware of. As the days go on the curse becomes more and more of an issue for her. Her love is in danger.

Meanwhile, her student Zazi is doing research to try and help her. And a former student of Connie's, Thomas, is after her for resources and support.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. I did enjoy the book. It's well-written and has interesting characters. But, for me, there were a few places that dragged a little. And the ending seemed to be resolved kind of quickly. I did like how she showed whether or not the working worked. And I enjoyed the historical aspect.

I would recommend this book especially to people that like stories about witches with a historical background. There is a nice Author's Note at the end that discusses some of the history involved in the book. I understand this is a follow-up book to The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, but it can be read and enjoyed without reading the first book.

Review: Summoned to Thirteenth Grave by Darynda Jones

Charley has been exiled from the earthly plain for eternity. But, somehow she is back after a mere 100 years. And Reyes is waiting for her. Sexy times commence.

A hell dimension has opened up in their home city. There is something infecting people and driving them mad. And there are still a couple of more storylines causing Charley to multitask to get everything done that she wants to be accomplished before the possible end of the world as we know it.

So, is it a wrap? Kinda. It seems like this wraps up Charley and Reyes story. Lots of things come to logical conclusions. Some things are still a surprise. Lots of sarcasm and sexiness as we've come to expect. And the fate of at least 2 characters is up in the air. Which leads us to the question so often asked... Will Beep's story be told? And on her blog, Darynda Jones confirms that at some point in the future it will be. When is up in the air, but it will be told. We have that to look forward to.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars for being a pretty satisfying conclusion to the series. There were a few parts that seemed a little rushed or contrived, but overall, it is good and satisfying. All the things we've grown to love about the series are present. I would recommend the series to fans of urban fantasy with paranormal aspects and a little romance and sex going on. This is not a standalone novel and should not be read as one.

Review: The Curses by Laure Eve

In this follow up to The Graces by Laure Eve, the youngest Grace, Summer, is the narrator. Everything is colored by her perceptions and impulses. Family is still the most important thing to the young Graces - Thalia, Fenrin, and Summer. Wolf has become family to them too.

The first order of business becomes getting thrown out of the boarding school they've been put into since the events of the last book. They need to be together and more readily accessible to each other. As a result, they end up back at the same school as River and their other old friends like Marcus. But something funky is going on. Someone has been taking money for wishes and granting them in a way that borderlines on curses. At first, they think it's all River's doing, but as the novel goes on, it becomes clear that there is more to it than meets the eye.

A second subplot involves the curse on the Grace family and examination of whether it is possible or not to break it. There is a third subplot, but spoilers. Each of these plot points receives good coverage, but as the plot winds to a crescendo, things begin to happen quickly and out of control.

Magic is very much a part of the novel. Both in the ritualistic sense and in magical realism sense. Magic occurs whether they want it to or not. It's just more effective when they actually try to create it.

The resolution is well done. I was a little confused about the party and its popularity since the Graces had been somewhat ostracized during much of the book. Still, overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's interesting and well written. Being told from Summer's point of view is a plus. She is a somewhat unreliable narrator, but she suits the story.

The Curses by Laure Eve is due to be released December 31st, 2018 from Amulet Books.

I hardly got them on again before something else happened and I was feverishly ripping them off and stuffing them in the wash with double amounts of soap and all the "extra" buttons pushed: extra wash, extra rinse, extra water, extra spin, extra protection against things that go bump in the night. Unfortunately, I never could find that last button. (p. 327)

Review: Toil and Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe

Toil and Trouble: 15 Tales of Women and Witchcraft edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe is a collection of short stories about witchy women. It was published August 20th, 2018 from Harlequin Teen.

As with all anthologies, there are some stories I liked more than others. But, I didn't hate any of them. My favorites were those where the magic was of the healing sort. That the tales weren't all from the same cultural perspective was a plus. And many of the stories had a feminist bent to them.

Among my favorites was "Starsong" by Tehlor Kay Mejia where there is a young witchy astrologist who is drawn to another girl. And I enjoyed "The Truth about Queenie" by Brandy Colbert where a girl is driven to find out if she really has power or not. And I liked "The Legend of Stone Mary" by Robin Talley which has a nice twist to it. There were more I liked than not.

At the end of the book was a list of all the authors with brief bios that included their favorite fictional witches. This was informative and entertaining.

I give this collection 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories about witches. It's a perfect read for October. It is a YA collection and some of the stories do have a feminist bent to them.

It's a queer kind of life indeed in this paranormal western featuring monsters such as the Strigoi - blood drinkers, and Wendigo - cannibals. In this quotation, Denton Folger is talking to Linthicum Odell regarding life on his homestead where his wife spends her days in the cellar as she has a peculiar affliction where she is sensitive to sunlight.

Yea Though I Walk by J.P. Sloan was published July 11th, 2016 from Curiosity Quills Press. If you're looking for a well-written weird western, this is a good one.

Review: Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire

This is the story of Rose Marshall, mostly after her untimely death. Rose was a sweet 16 teenaged girl who was a little pissed and was driving herself to the prom when she was run off the road by another car. As it turns out, it was Bobby Cross who was driving that car and he meant trouble for Rose, trouble that doesn't go away even once she's dead.

The book has an interesting format. There are stories about the different urban legends she has become associated with. And there is an overall arc about her conflict with Bobby Cross. Both kept my interest. It's also told part in the present and part in flashbacks. In spite of all that, it's easy enough to follow what's going on and enjoy the ride.

There is good characterization, especially of Rose. The world-building is solid and interesting. The stories move along at a decent pace and relate to each other.

Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's worth a read if you enjoy urban fantasy or ghost stories. And if you enjoy other books by this same author, such as the InCryptid series, then you will probably enjoy this book as well.

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire is book one in the Ghost Roads series. It was originally published in May 2014, a new edition is being released June 2018 from DAW. Book two, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown by Seanan McGuire is expected to be released July 17th, 2018 from DAW.

Why am I waiting on this one? It's the continuing story of Rose Marshall. I've got to know what happens with her and Bobby Cross. He seems so evil. I want her to beat him. And I want to know how she does it.

Review: School for Psychics by K.C. Archer

Theodora "Teddy" Cannon is in a tight spot. She owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in gambling debts. And in Vegas, her home, she has been banned from most casinos not because she counts cards or anything like that, but because of the accuracy with which she reads people. In disguise, she goes into a casino and sits down to play poker. She's doing ok until suddenly she isn't. And it would appear she's been recognized. As she flees for her life, a rather large man stops her and convinces her to listen to him. In exchange for paying her gambling debts, she will need to attend a law enforcement school for psychically gifted people. Between a rock and a hard place, Teddy agrees to go to the school.

The people at the school have a variety of psychic talents. They are all getting the same basic training though - basic physical training and basic psychic training. They naturally divide into two groups. The group Teddy belongs to is the "Misfits." The other group is more physically fit and almost like a clique of the popular kids. The two groups are encouraged to vie with one another especially when it comes to physical activities.

As the school year progresses, things escalate competition wise. There is a conspiracy of sorts floating around the school. Some of the students go missing. The FBI might be involved somehow. The Misfits work together to try and solve what's happening. The pace increases towards the end of the book as things come to a head.

Generally speaking, I enjoyed the book. I kind of felt like it had a YA vibe to it but the characters were supposed to be of the age to qualify as New Adult. The competition between the groups reminded me a little of the competition in the YA book The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau. The dangers were serious, but maybe not quite as many deadly dangers as in The Testing. The dangers were a little more focused on the conspiracy the students were investigating.

The characters were not all well developed but were developed enough to carry off the plot. There is some attraction between some of the students. There is some hooking up and possible romance. Nothing is explicit.

Overall, I give this book a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked it and it was pretty good. There is definitely room for a sequel to this book. I deducted half a star mostly because the characters seemed to act more YA than early 20s a lot of the time. And a little because of how things wrapped up when they are investigating the conspiracy and the FBI. It's still a good read. And it's a good introduction to a new series. I would recommend it to people who enjoy paranormal YA/New Adult literature.

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event which had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

This week the book I am waiting on is Murder on the Sugarland Express by Angie Fox. It's due to be released November 25th, 2017 from Moose Island Books. 

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Why am I waiting on this one? It's the 6th book in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I've read other books in the series and have enjoyed them. There is humor to the mysteries as well as the paranormal since Verity Long can communicate with ghosts. I've found the others fun to read.
