Why am I waiting on this book? The series appeals to me. I have it on my TBR list. I'm curious about the comparison to Jim Butcher, Terry Pratchett, and Ben Aaronovitch. I've read Jim Butcher and Terry Pratchett. This does sound like an urban fantasy, which I also enjoy. And I've enjoyed the X-Files, and other mysteries with a supernatural twist. I want to know if the Pale Rider is really supernatural and what does he want anyway?

Happy Book Birthday to A New Lease on Death by Olivia Blacke

I've started reading it. So far I am finding it interesting as to what the ghosts may do and how belief affects what happens to them. I'm looking forward to the rest of the book. Review to come.

Why am I waiting on this book? I've enjoyed other books in this series in the past. I've missed a few of them and hope to catch up on them one day. But in the mean time, this one sounds like it will be a good read. I like the idea of real treasure, modern day pirates, and pirate ghosts. Frankie the ghost will fit right in no doubt. And this sounds like Verity and her boyfriend will get to use their mystery solving skills. I'm hoping it can be read as a standalone as well as part of the series. There is usually at least a little humor in these books. And at least I don't have a long wait before it's available.

Book Review: The Haunting of Ivy May by Nancy Basile

My Thoughts:

This is a paranormal mystery. And it was an easy read. Once I started it, I wanted to know what would happen next. It spurred me on to finish it quickly. There is very little romance. The people focus is on building relationships with the townsfolk. The people who live in Mistwick are reluctant to trust her at first thinking she is just there to flip the house.

No one mentions the ghost to Ivy before she sees it for the first time. And it scares the crap out of her. She dedicates herself to finding out what she can do to get rid of it after it appears to her again and others actually see it as well. 

The pace is good. There are some strategic lulls, but they still advance the plot. The parts with the ghost go quickly.

The characters feel nice. I especially liked seeing the relationship between Izzy and Ivy flourish. And I disliked the cockroach of Ivy's ex-husband.

I did find the romance slightly unbelievable. The guy keeps accidentally insulting her and is handsome. Don't want to say more because of spoilers, but it didn't seem like much to build a romance on.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. It's an interesting story and a light read which I really needed after reading the heavier Our Share of Night. If you like light mysteries with a paranormal aspect and a touch of romance, this would be a good book for you.

Why am I waiting on this book? I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. I liked Reina and her friends. I find the premise interesting. I want to know what they find out, what trouble they get into, and how they get out of it while solving the mystery.

Book Review: The Quarter Storm by Veronica G. Henry

My Thoughts: 

I like the character of Reina. She believes strongly in what she does. She has a good nature and wants to help and guide people for the best possible outcome. She gets tied into a murder because a woman visits her the day before it happens. Reina feels a strong need to get involved and find the truth. 

The plot involves a lot of investigation and deduction on Reina's part. The other characters she interacts with are interesting, but I can't say I liked her ex much. I enjoyed the parts with Vodou and Reina's magic. The plot slows occasionally during the investigation, but overall progresses at a good rate. 

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It has interesting characters, a good plot, and makes interesting use of magic and Vodou. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Not that I doubted my sister, but her claims of having the power of foresight or prophesy or whatever it was struck me as … unreal. This was Toula, for crying out loud. Her hobbies were asking to speak with the manager, rolling her eyes, and being mildly disappointed in me. (1% through on my Kindle)

Why am I waiting on this one? I've enjoyed the other books in the Southern Ghost Hunter series. I like the characters in the books from Verity and Frankie to Verity's boyfriend Ellis and his eccentric family and beyond. If you enjoy a good paranormal mystery often blended with a normal mystery, then this is a good series for you to check out.

Why am I waiting on this one? I think it sounds interesting as a sort of prequel to the literary careers of Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde. The Black Bishop certainly seems like a good villain. I am wondering what supernatural forces he has at his beck and call and how he will use them against our heroes.

Review: The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian

I've read a lot of cozies, but this was the first one I've read with an alchemist and a gargoyle as protagonists.

Zoe Faust is an alchemist specializing in plants and herbs. She hasn't been practicing for a while, but now that she has transplanted to Portland, OR, she intends to remedy that. As she unpacks her crates, she comes to realize that she has picked up a stowaway - a living gargoyle! Dorian needs her help to fully understand what he is and to keep from reverting to stone. Together they plan to investigate the book he was born from until it's stolen.

Not only is Dorian's book stolen, but several others as well. And a murder occurs right on her doorstep. This isn't turning out to be the quiet life she envisioned her new digs to bring.

I enjoyed reading about the characters in the book. Zoe is a sympathetic character as is Dorian. I really wanted them to succeed in all they did. Dorian turns out to be an ace chef as well, catering to Zoe's vegan palate. A few recipes are included at the end of the book.

The mystery moves along at a good pace. The bits about the tunnels in Portland are interesting as is that the neighborhoods function like small towns.

One small drawback is the attention to detail about the food. It does mostly go to characterization, but I really didn't need to know each time Zoe consumed a green shake. On the other hand, Dorian is quite creative with his menus and after you read the author's note, it makes a little more sense why so much is included. Plus the cooking and reading that Dorian does help to characterize the dear fellow.

Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you like your cozies well-written with a touch of the paranormal and unique characters, then you should check out this series. I liked The Accidental Alchemist so much, I immediately downloaded the second book in the series as soon as I finished it.

Why am I waiting on this one? I love the creepy sound of it. And I'm curious about the "chilling paranormal twist" to the novel. The only thing that would make it more appealing at the moment would be if it was being released this month. It sounds like a good October read.

Why am I waiting on this one? This sounds a little different. It's not straight up crime solving. The paranormal is involved. I want to know what's happening to the ghosts. Why are they disappearing? Will Eve be able to help them? And how does her Ghost Precinct work to solve crimes anyway? It should be interesting.

Review: Pecan Pies and Dead Guys by Angie Fox

Angie Fox has another wonderfully fun mystery with Verity and Frankie in Pecan Pies and Dead Guys - the 7th entry in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series.

The ghostly Inspector De Clercq has drafted Frankie, Verity's resident ghost, to help him solve a murder mystery at a Great Gatsby era party. They have 3 days to solve the mystery and then it will be closed to them for another year. If they don't succeed, the inspector will lock Frankie up in ghost prison for good. With motivation like that, Frankie will pay close attention to the goings on at the Adair mansion. Verity will do her best to assist them in solving the mystery even though the inspector doesn't want the help of a live woman. Not sure which he considers the bigger liability, that she is alive or a woman.

Meanwhile, Ellis (Verity's boyfriend and a cop) has a mystery of his own to solve regarding a dead body in a ravine. And then Verity has an additional mystery - someone is leaving pecan pies at her house without a note or a friendly visit. Is someone stalking her?

I love the way Verity and Frankie interact. Their banter is entertaining. And it's obvious they've come to care about each other.

The mysteries are well done, especially the ghostly mystery at the 3-day party. There were plenty of suspects with motives. I loved the descriptions of the opulence of the mansion and the party and could easily picture it being made into a movie or a film.

While it can be read as a standalone, it might just whet your appetite for the rest of the series. It's not the first one that I've read and I feel the reader would perhaps get more enjoyment out of the book if they read some of the earlier ones as well.

I give this paranormal cozy 4 stars out of 5. It's well-written and entertaining. I look forward to the next installment in the series.
