Seven years ago, Coronado disappeared for six weeks. Afterwards, he'd sequestered himself in his home in upstate New York, leaving only to go walking a dog almost as big as himself. The mystery of what had caused him to hide away and reject the writing that had been his lifeblood was greater than anything he'd written into his adventure novels.

Nobody knew what had happened to Rick Coronado when he disappeared.

Damn. I'd planned my session of questions and answers without taking into account an essential fact. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a widower in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

I peeked through the open doorway. Hammie wasn't in the ground yet and already there were three widows circling round Randolph like vultures waiting for some poor animal to gasp its last breath. (61% through on my Kindle)

Review: Picked Off by Linda Lovely

Brie Hooker and her Aunt Eva live and work on the Udderly Kidding Dairy Farm - a goat dairy farm. They've consented to host her Aunt Eva's friend Carol's campaign fundraiser- which in the flavor of the season is a masquerade party complete with a haunted house in the barn. Carol's son, Zack, a pro-quarterback flies in to attend.

This mystery has so much: a vicious pitchfork attack, blackmail, kidnapping, and murder. It even alludes to the dangers of gambling. And yet it's not too much. There's rarely a dull moment once the action starts. Action packed scenes are balanced with investigation and discussion. There are motives old and new for the crimes. And while there are references to previous events, this book can be read as a standalone.

As with many cozies, romance is a subplot. Brie is attracted to two men and has refused to date either because they are best friends. By the end of the book, this changes and leaves the future open. This will allow for growth and change in the main character of Brie.

Other than Brie and Eva, my favorite character is Brie's close friend Mollye. Mollye is dating a police officer and runs a new age store. She also easily comes up with some of the most out-there ideas for how to proceed with investigating the mysteries.

The plot is well-paced. It's well-written. I enjoyed the characters and their adventures as they try to solve the mysteries, Overall, I give this book 4 stars.

Picked Off by Linda Lovely is the second Brie Hooker mystery. It was released June 5th, 2018 from Henery Press.

Review: Lowcountry Bookshop by Susan M. Boyer

One dark and extremely stormy Charleston night, a man is hit by a vehicle and killed crossing the street near his home. Who did it? Was it intentional? Was it a hit and run? Was it the woman who says she stopped to help the victim? The dent on the front of her car suggests it could go either way for her. Liz Talbot and her partner Nate are hired to find the answers to these questions and more in the seventh installment in the Liz Talbot Mystery series.

Liz and Nate are hired by a law firm to investigate. They won't tell her who hired them to look into it, but they do admit that it's because their client is worried about the woman who stopped to help the victim. Poppy is a sweet woman and seemingly wouldn't harm a fly. Could she possibly be responsible for this accident?

Several of the women under investigation frequent the same bookstore. Also several of them have a connection to a group of women helping abused women. Was the man killed an abuser?

More information comes out as Liz and Nate investigate. Colleen, their ghostly friend, plays only a very little role in this mystery encouraging them to stay on track and keep investigating. I like that she doesn't come out and provide all the answers for them.

Periods of serious investigation are punctuated by the more lighthearted escapades of Liz's family. Her daddy seems to try and one-up himself in his quest to disturb her mamma when he acquires some goats and a pool building business.

It's a private investigation procedural. It gets a little repetitive at times, but it all goes to advancing the plot.

Overall, I give this mystery 4 out of 5 stars. The mystery shows good imagination as the pieces come together. It's well-written and paced well. The end has a bit of a twist, but it works. And I really enjoyed the humorous family parts.

Lowcountry Bookshop by Susan M. Boyer was released May 29th, 2018 from Henery Press.

The thing I couldn't get out of my mind was  Mallory saying that she shouldn't have come to the visitation. She'd known Phillip Drayton most of her life. The only reason she'd say such a thing was a guilty conscience. The question was, what was she feeling guilty about? Was it an unrequited love, an affair, or something much worse? Review: Killing in C Sharp by Alexia Gordon

Gethsemane Brown saved her current residence from developers in the preceding book. Now, in book 3 in the series, she and her ghostly companion must face down some ghost hunters. The owner of her residence has given the ghost hunters permission to look for ghosts on the property. Gethsemane and Eamon must work together to keep Eamon from discovery.

Meanwhile, a distasteful critic has appeared on the scene as a new opera is prepared to debut. Only problem: the new opera draws the attention of a vengeful ghost who is seeking to take revenge on firstborn males. Can Gethsemane and Eamon keep the ghost from killing them all? When the critic turns up dead, can Gethsemane solve that mystery as well?

This is a well-written cozy mystery. I liked the characterization. It seemed almost like the village itself was a character as to how people interacted.

The pacing was good. The plot was well drawn and a little different with the addition of the vengeful ghost mystery to the murder mystery. I didn't see the end coming. I enjoyed being surprised by how things worked out exactly.

Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's well worth a read. This book works well as a standalone since some it seems that some of Gethsemane's normal interactions are curbed by the vengeful ghost sickening people. Enough background is given to appreciate the mysteries and their solutions. And I suspect that like me, once you've read this one, you will want to read others in the series. This is a good read for fans of cozies, especially small town cozies.

Killing in C Sharp by Alexia Gordon was published March 6th, 2018 by Henery Press.

Review: Murder on the Rocks by Shawn Reilly Simmons

Penelope, Arlena, and Nadia are having breakfast outdoors at a local cafe when it's robbed. Just prior to the attack, Penelope noticed a man across the street watching the cafe, or them, or both. She wonders if he is part of the crew that robbed the place.

Not long after, Penelope, Arlena, and Nadia meet again on location in Vermont. Arlene is the star of the film. Nadia is a consultant. And Penelope is in charge of catering on site. Penelope seems to be developing PTSD since the robbery. And the people in charge of the film are making unusual requests of her – that the food be locally sourced and no plastics be used among other things. The goal, they say, is to lessen the carbon footprint of the film. An attack befalls Nadia. Penelope wonders if there is a connection to the events at the cafe.

Penelope's boyfriend, Joey, is a detective with the police. He is looking into the robbery. But, he is also suggesting to Penelope that they might be ready to take their relationship to the next level.

This is a good mystery. It's well-written. It grabbed my attention and held it. The characters are well drawn and interesting. The romance between Penelope and Joey is a minor plot, but it all flows together.

My only complaint is that the title of the book seems to have little to do with the plot. Otherwise, it is an excellent cozy mystery.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. I liked it enough to look into other books in the series. It's written so that you could read it as a standalone, but if you like it you will want more of the characters. The incidental information about how a film set and catering service works is interesting. All in all, it's a good cozy read.

Murder on the Rocks by Shawn Reilly Simmons is expected to be published February 6, 2018 by Henery Press.

Review: The Phantom of Oz by Cindy Brown

Ivy Meadows, actress and almost private-investigator, is at it again in the fifth installment in the series The Phantom of Oz by Cindy Brown. Ivy gets word that her close friend Candace Moon is going to be in town performing a space opera version of the Wizard of Oz. But, Candy isn't looking like her usual vibrant, voluptuous self. It looks like she's developed an eating disorder or an addiction to diet pills or perhaps both. A chandelier drops on some of the cast during a rehearsal. Then Candy up and disappears. The wicked witch who is auditioning the munchkins, Babette, doesn't seem too concerned. Candy's boyfriend hires Ivy to find Candy. Meanwhile, accidents continue to plague the production. People begin to wonder if the rumored theater ghost is real.

There are really 3 mysteries in this book. The first is about the accidents plaguing the production. The second is where has Candy gone? And the third is a murder mystery. Cindy Brown handles them all well. Entwined within the mysteries is a theme of body image and how mean people can be to those that differ from their ideal especially perhaps in the theater/film crowd. Ms. Brown promotes the idea of a healthy body image using the costumer for the company.

The mysteries are well-written. They all kept my attention. One scene has Ivy down in a room with a pool of water of unknown depth looking for Candace. The suspense and tension of the scene were such that I had trouble reading what happens even knowing that the heroine will most likely be okay in the end. It might not be a long scene, but it's definitely one that shows the talent the author has for creating suspense.

Overall I give this mystery 4 stars out of 5. It's well-written. The characters are believable. The mysteries are suspenseful and resolved well. I liked the theme of body image woven into the story. It's an important and timely topic. I was able to read and enjoy this book without having read the earlier books in the series. I liked the story and writing enough to look into them at a future date though.

The Phantom of Oz is due to be released January 30, 2018 from Henery Press.

Review: The Ninja's Illusion by Gigi Pandian

The Ninja's Illusion (A Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery Book 5)The Ninja's Illusion by Gigi Pandian

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed The Ninja's Illusion. As with her other Jaya Jones mysteries, Gigi Pandian makes the country the characters are visiting, its culture and pertinent history accessible and interesting.

There are 2 different mysteries at play. One involves the magicians; the other involves history. Each mystery is captivating in its own way. The mysteries begin even before Jaya has left the States for Japan. I found myself caught up in the book. There were a few lulls, but overall there is more action than not. Even during the lulls, the plot is moving forward, which is as it should be.

The characters are interesting and likable. And there is a good variety of characters. The story about the kitsune who has become a magician's assistant brings an exotic flavor to the plot. I liked that it was up in the air for much of the book as to just how much of a mischevious spirit fox she really was.

Overall, it's a well-written mystery made even better by Pandian's treatment of the location and culture. The history that is blended in makes the reading a richer experience. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Waiting on Wednesday #198/Can't Wait Wednesday: Cold as Ice by Julie Mulhern

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event which had been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. I'm now linking up with "Can't-Wait Wednesday" hosted over at Wishful Endings.

This week the book I can't wait to get my hands on is Cold as Ice by Julie Mulhern. It's due out October 17, 2017 from Henery Press.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Ellison Russell’s life resembles a rollercoaster ride. And rollercoasters make her ill. Her daughter Grace has a crush on a boy Ellison doesn’t trust and she’s taken to hosting wild parties when Ellison goes out for the evening. Worse, the bank which represents Grace’s inheritance from her father may be in trouble.

When a meeting with the chef at the country club leads to the discovery of a body, Ellison can’t afford cold feet. She must save the bank, find the killer, and convince Grace (and herself) that powerful women don’t need men to rescue them.

Why am I waiting on this one? I've enjoyed the other books in the Country Club Murders series. I'm curious to see how this one goes with the tagline saying "she must convince Grace and herself that powerful women don't need men to rescue them." It sounds like Ellison really has her plate full. And it's from Henery Press. The mysteries like this one generally have some sense of humor to them. I hope that's true this time as well.

What book are you waiting on this week? Share it or a link in the comments so we can check it out and maybe add it to our TBR lists. Thanks for coming by and Happy Reading!

Review: Southern Fried by Tonya Kappes

Southern Fried is the second book in the Kenni Lowry mystery series published by Henery Press. Kenni is a Sheriff in a small town. Her grandfather, and former Sheriff, has come back as a ghost to help her out in policing the town of Cottonwood, Kentucky. She has the help of her new deputy, Finn Vincent, as well.

When one of the local residents is found facedown in a greenhouse, Kenni and her deputy are called to the scene. The body has strange marks on its ankles that correspond to old electrical fencing. And he 's barefoot and his feet are clean. He didn't walk his ownself into that greenhouse. Someone deposited him there.

In spite of it being a small town, there are several suspects and motives to choose from. Finn seeks enlightenment at the local watering hole while Kenni attends a Euchre game where the gossip is hot. Small town investigating seems a little casual, but just right.

The characters in this mystery are interesting and quirky. There's the hard of hearing dispatcher, the feisty florist, and the devastatingly handsome new deputy from Chicago to name a few. Kenni's ghostly Poppa plays the role of a guide and co-investigator, but I think most of the investigation is done smartly by Kenni and Finn.

It has a good pace to it. And it has a good sense of humor. I love the attitude the town has about her dog. If people see him out and about, sometimes they just collect him in their car or truck and drop him back off at the sheriff's office. And there is an undercurrent of romance as Kenni fights her attraction to Finn.

It's a satisfying mystery. It has its twists. And there are surprises at the reveal.

Overall I give this mystery 4 out of  5 stars. If you like small town, southern mysteries,  you will enjoy this one. And to paraphrase Henery Press: if you have enjoyed one of the other mysteries put out by Henery Press, you will most likely enjoy this one as well.

Southern Fried is expected out April 4, 2017.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

"You might just fit in here after all, Yank." She smiled back at him before she grabbed the steel round dough cutter and plopped out biscuits on a cookie sheet.
I swear I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own brain. If the shoe were on the other foot and I'd said that to her, she'd have called my mama despite the fact that I was a twenty-eight-year-old woman.

Waiting on Wednesday #171: Masked to Death by Christina Freeburn

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event which has been hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A Caribbean cruise is the perfect setting for a Roget wedding, and Faith meeting Ted’s family. She also hopes the vacation gets their stalled romance moving, but it doesn’t take long for that dream to capsize. Ted’s daughter hates her. The ex-wife is adored. Odessa Roget is surly. And the banned father of a groom, John Roget, requests Faith’s assistance in bringing down a jewel theft ring masterminded by his ex-wife.

Having had a man she loved accuse her of a crime, Faith won’t let Odessa travel down the same path and agrees to help. Faith sets her course on uncovering the true criminals—which might be a groom’s best friend. The romantic week turns disastrous as a wedding is interrupted, suspicious deaths point to murders, and Ted’s daughter schemes to reunite her parents. Instead of diamonds being a girl’s best friend, Faith finds they’re cruising toward Davy Jones’ Locker.

Why am I waiting on this one? It's a humorous cozy. It's put out by Henery Press - part of their "if you like one, you'll probably like them all" humorous mystery series. Even though I haven't read this author before, I look forward to the enjoyable, light reading of a good cozy. It's due out on January 24, 2017. This is number 5 in the Faith Hunter Scrap This mystery series.

Waiting on Wednesday #157: Send in the Clowns by Julie Mulhern

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Haunted houses are scary enough without knife-wielding clowns. Especially murderous knife-wielding clowns. So thinks Ellison Russell, single mother, artist, and reluctant sleuth.
Now death wears a red nose and Ellison is up to the blood-stained collar of her new trench coat in costumes, caffeine, and possible killers. Who stabbed Brooks Harney? And why? Money? Jealousy? Drugs?

With Mother meddling, her father furious, and her date dragged downtown for questioning, turns out Ellison's only confidante is Mr. Coffee.

Why am I waiting on this book? It sounds like a good, humorous mystery. And it looks like a good seasonal read. It's being released from Henery Press. They have a reputation for good, humorous mysteries among other things. Send in the Clowns will be coming out just before Halloween on October 25, 2016.

Waiting on Wednesday #140: Fixin' to Die by Tonya Kappes

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.

With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out.

Why am I waiting on this book? This is a mystery series with a paranormal element to it as well as some humor. I love a good mystery that also happens to have a sense of humor about it.

Fixin' to Die by Tonya Kappes is the first book in a new series featuring Sheriff Kenni Lowry. It's due out June 14, 2016 from Henery Press.
