I've just recently started this book. I don't read much romance. I am finding this one appealing so far and looking forward to getting into the paranormal aspects and seeing how that affects the main characters. Review to come.

I've read books previously by 2 of the authors - Elle Cosimano and Jesse Q. Sutanto. Both of them write top notch humorous mysteries. I am looking forward to reading the selections by the other authors as well. I am thinking I might find some new favorites. Review to come.

Book Review: Demon Hunting with a Southern Sheriff by Lexi George

My thoughts: Welcome to Hannah, Alabama where the supers live alongside the norms but try to keep that part of their identity hidden. Shapeshifters, gods, goddesses, demon hunters and more reside there. 

There are a lot of characters in this book. Being as this was my first book in the series and it was book 6, there were quite a few mentioned that I didn’t know. I found I needed to focus on the main characters for this book and let the rest kind of slide. That way I was able to enjoy the book. If you’d read other books in the series, this might not be an issue.

The characters are interesting. There is a lot of good banter. Some characters speak in a Southern dialect. Others speak a more medieval type dialect full of thees and thous. At first I found this annoying. Later on it helped keep straight who was talking. And I’m not a big fan of insta-love, but it seemed to be in the nature of some of the characters. 

Overall, I gave it 4 stars out of 5. It’s got a fast moving plot. You want to know what happens next. And the characters are interesting. If you’ve read the earlier books, it might be easier to understand some of what goes on. Still if you like your urban fantasy with romance, this would be a good series to try.

Demon Hunting with a Southern Sheriff by Lexi George is expected out April 12th, 2022 from Lyrical Press. 

Why am I waiting on this book?  It sounds different to me. I haven't read any other books where there's been a mix that included good ol' boys and werewolves. I'm wondering how a demon hunter will be able to help the sheriff.  The romance part is secondary to me. The mystery aspect is my primary draw.

Book Review: Not Your Average Hot Guy by Gwenda Bond

My Thoughts:

This would make a great beach read as Alix Harrow suggests. It's a light romantic comedy that happens to be set against the backdrop of the possible end of the world. It's told in alternating points of view. One chapter by Callie, the next from Luke and so on. It's easy to follow the change. It's well labelled, plus they each have their own voice. My only complaint is that they read a little younger than they're supposed to be. Still, it qualifies as a New Adult paranormal romance. 

Gwenda Bond manages to maintain a light atmosphere throughout what could have been heavy moments such as when Callie and Luke journey through Hell. And both characters have opportunities to be clever and experience personal growth. There's an interesting personification of Styx in Hell. And they wouldn't be able to accomplish everything without allies both above and below. 

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. It's a fun read. It's well written and fast moving. And I liked the characters. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Not Your Average Hot Guy by Gwenda Bond was published October 5th, 2021 by St. Martin's Griffin.

Review: Tempting the Dragon by Karen Whiddon

Rance Sleighter is a photo journalist. He promises his very ill step-daughter that he will get a photograph of a lake monster for her. He has investigated some of the other lakes rumored to have monsters and is now in the small town of Forestwood, New York hoping to finally end his search.

Jade Burnett and her family have a witchy reputation with the town. And some of the Burnetts have indeed been guardian to a lake monster over the years. Townspeople tell Rance to go talk to Jade about the lake monster rather than wasting their time.

Rance and Jade meet in a restaurant in town and get off on the wrong foot.  Of course this will not be the only thing to get in the way of their developing a loving relationship. Family and fae will too, for a minimum.

Rance and Jade are both shifters, but of different sorts. This too inhibits their relationship because they aren't supposed to talk about what kind of shifter each is and more.

I wasn't thrilled with what comes off initially as insta-love, but really is more insta-lust. Their loving relationship has to be built over the course of the book. And Rance just isn't very good at it. Despite what he is doing for his step-daughter, he is somewhat self-centered and very much into protecting himself from hurt.

The subplot of dealing with the fae is good. It was very straight forward. My only objection to this part of the book was that things seemed to be settled too easily.

The pace of the book is good and the characters are interesting. There is suspense as to whether or not Rance will be allowed to meet the monster as well as a few other things. I found myself reading quickly to find out what happens next.

This is a standalone novel. I thought this was a good story. It's well written. I give it 4 stars out of 5. It's good, but not great. Still, if you enjoy books about shifters, fae, and romance, then this would be a good book for you. It would make a good beach read too.

Review: Wicked Burn by Rebecca Zanetti

Demons, shifters, and witches... Oh my! Well, there certainly was a lot of action in this book. There was both the action sequences of fighting and running and the bedroom action scenes. This was my first book by Rebecca Zanetti. The action scenes were good. The bedroom scenes I wasn't as thrilled with.

I was surprised by how quickly the characters fell back in bed together after being broken up for 100 years. It seemed like some kind of insta-love or insta-lust. And also surprised by how frequently they were in bed together. There's nothing really wrong with that. It's just not really my cup of tea. Especially with one of the characters tending to be on the controlling side of things.

The plot was interesting. Simone is an Irish witch who has been falsely accused of some things including attempted murder of other witches on the high council. And someone is definitely after her. If they can't get her in court, they seem determined to kill her outside of it. Some of her family want her to hide out while they prepare a defense and they've chosen Nikolaj Veis to aid them - her former demon lover who broke up with her 100 years ago.

I liked the idea of shifters that can change at will. And this was my first bear shifter story. I liked that there were other kinds of shifters. How the group interacts seemed explained well.

These characters are supposed to be immortals of sorts. And they are trying to hide their existence from the other people on the planet. Frankly, I don't know how they could with chase scenes and the like.

It is a fast paced book. I read it as a standalone, but it definitely should be read as part of the series in order to fully appreciate what's going on. I was a little lost at times.

By the time I got to the novella that is included in the book I had a fairly good grasp of what kinds of things to expect from the characters. I actually enjoyed the novella a little more than the novel. Again it was action intense. There were people out to kill or kidnap one of the main characters in the novella named Cara. The reason why isn't fully understood until near the end of the piece.

Overall I give both the novel and novella a rating of 3. I liked them, but for me they weren't great. They are paranormal romances, and  hot ones, definitely aimed at adults. They have enjoyable stories overall. If you like your paranormal romances hot, then this is a good book for you. Just read the other 2 in the series first for your best experience.

My thoughts on Siren's Call:
Lily Bosarge is the first mermaid I've read about in a while. And this is the first book that I've read by Debbie Herbert. There are 2 other books in the series, but Siren's Call does read well as a standalone.

The book is well written and fast paced. The suspense is well done. Will the killer find Lily and wipe her out the way his last 2 girlfriends were killed? Will their secrets keep them apart?

I liked how the book mixed Native American folklore and mythology with European traditions about mermaids. The portions on mermaid heritage are thoughtful.

The romance is awesome. Nash and Lily don't hit it off all at once and their relationship develops along with the characters' development during the story.

You'll like this book if you enjoy paranormal mysteries or romantic suspense with a paranormal touch. I really enjoyed it and give it 4 out of 5 stars.

This week the book I am waiting on is The Dead Play On by Heather Graham.

This is #3 in the Cafferty and Quinn series. It is expected to be published March 31, 2015 by MIRA.

Why am I looking forward to this book? I've enjoyed the first two Cafferty and Quinn books in the series. It's both a paranormal mystery and a little bit of a romance. Danni Cafferty is a strong female character with artistic talent that sometimes is influenced by the paranormal. Former policeman Michael Quinn is a gentleman when it's called for and a sleuth when necessary. Together they make a good team. I also like the cast of recurring support characters in the book.

Review: The Quick and the Undead by Kimberly Raye

The Quick and the Undead had a new concept for me - vampire cowboys. I like historical cowboy romances and I like vampires. What more could I ask for?

The Tombstone Ten are running a Wild West experience in Tombstone, Texas. They had all been turned into vampires by the same person about 200 years in the past. They did some robbing of the rich or "deserving" and shared with those who needed it. Raye doesn't make a big deal out of this.

What Kimberly Raye does make a big deal out of is Boone's romance with Riley. Boone is the Sheriff of this town. Riley is a travel blogger visiting the resort in order to write about it. She's had some bad experiences in the past with her ex-husband who was abusive. So in spite of their chemistry it's a little surprising when they hook up. Riley is witness to a brutal attack on one of the employees. Boone decides that she needs protecting and spirits her away to a private cave.

My objection is how quickly lust becomes instalove. You have a previously abused woman falling for another alpha male who is keeping her in a cave "for her own good." It smacks of Stockholm syndrome. And the book ends in a cliffhanger. I would give the second book in this series a chance.

It is a romance and the sex scenes are very steamy. They could almost qualify the book as erotica.

I gave the book 3 stars because I liked it, but I didn't love it. There were some places I had trouble suspending my disbelief. But, if you like steamy paranormal romance and don't mind the instalove, then this book might be for  you.

Waiting on Wednesday #64 - Process by Sarah Stodola and The Quick and the Undead by Kimberly Raye

This week I am waiting on 2 unrelated books. The first book is Process: The Writing Lives of Great Authors by Sarah Stodola.  

This sounds like a good book if you like to read about how authors write. In particular this book states that what sets it apart from others of its type is that "Process puts the true methods of writers on display.Each chapter contains a mini biography of one of the world’s most lauded authors, focused solely on his or her writing process. Drawn from both existing material and original research and interviews, Stodola brings to light the fascinating, unique, and illuminating techniques behind these literary behemoths." It's supposed to focus on really how they write and not techniques as much. This book is due out January 20, 2015 from Amazon Publishing.

The second book I am waiting on is coming out December 31, 2015

Now that he can handle." Should be interesting. I like the premise that it's vampires instead of re-enactors that are staffing the town. I am curious about the world building and what sorts of powers/tolerances the vampires have and how they came to live as a group in this town. I hope the author pays as much attention to that as to the romantic parts.

Review: Waking the Dead by Heather Graham

Waking the Dead by Heather Graham is #2 in her Cafferty and Quinn Series. Published March 24, 2014 by MIRA books, it has an interesting, twisty plot involving a painting that somehow has the power to attack and kill people. The painting was created by an artist during the Year Without a Summer as part of the same challenge where Mary Shelley created Frankenstein. Wherever the painting goes, death seems to follow. And no two people seem to be killed the same way.

The painting pops up in New Orleans. The murders begin with the courier and his family. Every murder that has some sort of witness, the witness says a sudden fog arose. Meanwhile a gallery in town has made giclee prints of the painting and is offering them for sale.

Danni Cafferty must read in her father's book to see if there is a detail on how to stop the murders. Meanwhile, Quinn is out investigating the murders and looking for the painting. Together they band forces with among others, Hattie - rich widow and owner of the painting, Natasha - a voodoo priestess, Father Ryan - a Catholic priest, and Ron Hubert - coroner who is current owner of the castle where the painting was done oh so many years ago.

What's good about the book - the characterizations, the plot, the suspense. I thought that the idea of the painting having several causes of death rather than only one methodology was interesting. But that there was still a way for them to recognize that a death belonged to the painting as opposed to a random theft or attack was very useful. There had to be some logical way to tie the deaths together. Mark Twain said, "Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities." Also, I think there is just the right touch of romance between Quinn and Danni. It doesn't overwhelm the plot, but rather draws the reader deeper into the story.

Is there anything not so hot about the book? It gets a little slow in parts, but overall it's well done.

I would recommend this book for fans of Heather Graham of course, but also for people who like Barbara Michaels, paranormal romance, and paranormal suspense.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Waiting on Wednesday #44 - Black Rook by Kelly Meade

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. 

This week I am anticipating the July 15, 2014 released of Black Rook by Kelly Meade by Intermix books. The loup garou or werewolves and magic users live side by side with humans. 

The trilogy is called Cornerstone Run. According to the author, the reason for this is: You’re probably curious what the heck Cornerstone Run means. Cornerstone is the name of the small Pennsylvania town where about eight hundred loup garou live and work and basically try to keep humans from knowing they exist in the world. Twelve other sanctuary towns like it are spread out throughout the country, each led by an Alpha. And a run is their word for “pack.”
